Each year, more than 190,000 American
women develop breast cancer — the most common cancer among women
in the United States. When detected and treated early, however, breast
cancer often can be completely cured and, fortunately, women today have
the benefit of the best detection and treatment options ever offered.
Diagnostic Services at Joe Arrington Cancer Research and Treatment Center
(JACC) offers screening and diagnostic mammograms, digital stereotactic
breast biopsies, ultrasound, ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, bone densitometry
exams for the evaluation of osteoporosis, minimally invasive breast biopsies
(MIBB) and Advanced Breast Biopsy Instrumentation (ABBI).
All technologists in the Diagnostics Department are licensed by the State
of Texas, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and are certified
in mammography by the American College of Radiology. The department exceeds
the standard of quality assurance set by the state and federal government.
JACC is an FDA approved Mammography facility. All of the films are interpreted
by Board Certified Radiologists who each meet or exceed the qualifications
required to read mammograms or ultrasound findings.
The ABBI system uses highly accurate x-ray technology that enables the
Center to quickly locate suspicious areas and remove a biopsy specimen.
The ABBI system combines the placement of the wire marker and removal
of a tissue sample into one minimally invasive procedure that can be performed
under local anesthesia. Stereotactic technology (x-ray) incorporated into
the ABBI system allows the surgeon to locate the lesion to within 1 mm
of accuracy. |
