UpToDate: http://www.uptodate.com Now patients have access to UpToDate, to learn more about a medical condition, better understand management and treatment options, and have a better dialogue with health care providers.

Patient Organizations

American Cancer Society: http://www.cancer.org 1959 Clifton Road, N.E., Atlanta, GA 30329, 800-227-2345 Special Programs: Look Good Feel Better helps patients in treatment use wigs and other accessories to raise their self-image; Reach to Recovery connects breast cancer survivors with women undergoing breast cancer treatment; Man to Man connects prostate cancer survivors to other men undergoing prostate cancer treatment; CanSurmount connects patients with cancer survivors. Telephone counselors can provide referrals to community resources and medical information by phone or sent through the mail. Extensive information is available on the ACS website. Local offices may provide patient transportation, and may stock wigs or prostheses to those in financial need. They also offer a catalog of special products for those with breast cancer or suffering hair loss. Some limited financial assistance is available for home health care, childcare, medical equipment and pain medication for those with little or no insurance. The ACS can intervene in medical insurance disputes as well.

Association of Cancer Online Resources:
(ACOR): http://www.acor.org ACOR offers information about cancer patient resources on the Internet. It allows patients to research and sign up for many cancer-specific listservers, where patients and caregivers may have discussions via email or live online chats with other patients and caregivers.

Medscape.com:
http://www.medscape.com This website offers an extensive collection of articles on the latest cancer research, practice guidelines, latest cancer news, conference summaries, information on cancer-related medications, and related website links. To use this website, you must do a one-time registration. It has in-depth “Resource Centers” on breast, prostate and lung cancers, as well as pain management and anemia-related fatigue. It also offers a weekly “MedPulse” email notification of the latest news on the specialties you choose.

Through its allied organization, Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, it offers the OCN® and AOCN® certifications for oncology nurses. They also offer extensive patient education information on their website and partner with organizations to create patient education materials.

They make referrals to enterostomal nurses (experts in ostomies) and to distributors of ostomy equipment.

Leukemia Society of America:

There are many local chapters, some with a Family Support Group program. LSA matches new patients with survivors for support.

Lymphoma Research Foundation of America:

Experts answer questions; a newsletter and resource library are offered. The website is sponsored by CancerCare® and the Oncology Nursing Society.

 

Prostate Cancer

American Foundation for Urologic Disease: http://www.afud.org AFUD’s mission is the prevention and cure of urologic diseases through the expansion of research, education, and public awareness. For prostate cancer patients, they offer the Prostate Cancer Support Network, which links prostate cancer support groups, survivors, families and friends by coordinating prostate cancer awareness and advocacy programs, focusing on the issues of prostate cancer survivors.
