The cancer registry is a data system designed
for the collection, management, analysis and dissemination of data on
persons with cancer who have been diagnosed and/or treated at Covenant
Medical Center, Covenant Lakeside, the JACC, Covenant Family Healthcare
Centers, Home Health Preferred, SurgiCenter and any facility managed or
owned by Covenant Health System. Data from 1986 onward is computerized
and available.
The data maintained by the cancer registry is available to the medical
staff and other healthcare professionals for special studies, reports
and research. The cancer registry provides an analysis of recurrence,
extension or spread of disease, development of new malignances, assessment
of treatment and initiation of preventive measures. It serves as a vital
data source for the Texas State Registry and the National Cancer Database
(NCDB) to document cancer statistics.
In addition to collecting patient data, the registry coordinates the implementation
of the American College of Surgeons (ACOS) on Cancer Guidelines. The cancer
registry participates in the ACOS Commission on Cancer Patient Care Evaluation
Studies on an annual basis. This assures that patients are receiving the
highest quality of care as set by the National Cancer Institute.
Patients at JACC are provided with an annual lifetime follow-up service
that is a continuing monitor for diagnostic and treatment results. Follow-up
also serves as an automatic reminder to both the patient and physician
to schedule regular physical exams.
